Amory was born in So.Dansville, Steuben Cty., NY, son of Charles Oliver and Phebe (Willson) Oliver of So. Dansville, NY. Charles Oliver a descendant of Olivers of Ulster, IRE who immigrated through Boston c.1718, then pioneered to Athol, MA as some of its early settlers.

In the early 1850s Amory worked for the US Govt assisting with sectioning land in the midwest. He met and married Lucretia (Vance) in So.Dansville, NY in 1856. They resided in Marquette Cty., WI, where Amory had purchased land, then in 1861, along with 30-40 other families, purportedly led by Indian Scout, Jim Bridger, they traveled to Petaluma, CA where Amory purchased land and became a rancher and fruit grower.

In 1876 Amory explored TX for better ranching possibilities, purchasing land on Pool Branch near Strickling in Burnet Cty., TX When the homestead was completed in early 1877,his family arrived to their new home, called "Old Rocky", via train and stagecoach.

Their sons were involved in the ranch, becoming well known in the area for their grades of cattle and fine horses, using a Cleveland Bay stud which Amory imported from England. Over time he accumulated upwards of 3,000 acres in Burnet. They annually cultivated corn, oats, wheat and hay on their land. As their sons grew, they built their own homesteads on part of their father's property, and raised their families there.

By 1900 Amory and Lucretia moved to a Victorian home on Ford St. in East Lampasas, when Amory took part in city affairs and was a bank director. Their sons moved their families into Lampasas to receive their education.

Amory and Lucretia's daughter, Alma (Oliver) Moore, died in Lampasas from childbirth complications in 1902. They raised some of her young children in Lampasas.
