Newton J. Childs, 79, Died After Illness
Newton J. Childs, 79, a resident of this city for the past 35 years, died this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Russell Ritchey, 836 South Walnut street. He had been ill for the past four years.
Mr. Childs was born on April 6, 1870 in Weston, Ind., the son of the late Henry and Jane Young Childs. He was married February 14, 1900, in Indianapolis to Ethelyn McPherson, who died in 1934. He was a retired railroad man, having worked for a number of years for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. He was a member of the Zion Baptist Church. He was widely known and enjoy the acquaintance and esteem of a wide circle of friends.
He is survived by six children; Mrs. Bryan Clark of Seymour; Myron H. Childs, of Indianapolis; Miss Iris Childs, of Oak Park, Ill; Maynard S. Childs, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Russell Ritchey, of Seymour; and Roy L. Childs, of Dearborn, Mich. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren; six great grandchildren and two nephews, B.H. Wrapp, of Seymour and Clinton Childs, residing near Columbus. A daughter, Mrs. Doris Pittman, two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon from the Cana Church with the Rev. Walter Moseley, of Uniontown in charge. Burial in the Cana Cemetery.
