Phoebe Alice Griffith, daughter; of Andrew and Elizabeth Griffith
was born at Lanark, Ill., Sept. 12, 1870 and departed this life Feb.
12, 1962 at the home of her daughter, in Carleton at the age of
91 years and 4 months.
At the age of 2 years she with her parents, brothers and sister
came to Nebraska in a covered wagon where her father took a
homestead northwest of Carleton and built a sod house which they
lived in until her father built a frame house—one of the first in
the community.
She spent her girlhood on this; farm which was often visited by
Indians.
On Jan. 4, 1893 she was united in marriage to Jacob Baker at
Hebron, Nebr.
To this union were born three children, Frank and Shirley of
Carleton, Linnie (Mrs. Aaron Zehr) of Shickley who preceded
her in death just five weeks ago.
After her marriage she lived on a farm southwest of Carleton
until they purchased her parents old homestead where she resided
until her husband's death, Aug. 14, 1942, when she moved to
Carleton and made her home with her daughter Shirley until her
death.
She was baptized in the Brethren Church, Nov. 16, 1916, and
remained a faithful member of the church WMS until she became unable to attend.
She leaves to mourn her passing one son Frank, one daughter Shirley Frank,
three grandchildren five great grandchildren, 1 sister and one daughter-in-law
besides a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, her
parents, five brothers, two sister and two sons-in-law.
Funeral services were held in the Brethren Church at Carleton
Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. Rev. Sylvus Flora in charge with Mrs. Doug
Graul as pianist. Vocal music by Mrs Marie Tinkham and Mrs.
Willard Swenson.
The many beautiful flowers bore mute testimony to Mrs. Baker who
lived 89 years in this community.
Harlan Horner, Allen Betty, W. Leff, Norman Walker, Harold Bice and
Elmer Werner were the casket bearers.
Interment took place in the Bethel Cemetery. Urbauer Funeral Home in charge.
