Counties of Warren, Benton, Jasper and Newton, Indiana, 1883, p. 573 has this biographical sketch about Samuel Elliott of Gillam Township, Jasper County, Indiana: SAMUEL ELLIOTT, stock-raiserand farmer, is a ntaive of Tippecanoe County, IN, was born March 27, 1833, and is a son of John and Rebecca (Steele) Elliott, both natives of Virginia and of Irish descent. Samuel Elliott has taken care of himself since he was sixteen years of age, after being reared as a farmer, and at which he continued to labor. He was married March 13, 1859 to Miss Almira J. Gibbs,who died in 1866, leaving him with four children: John W., Estaline, Sylvia A. and Phoebe J. Mr. Elliott's second marriage was to Mrs. Sarah E. (Cooper) Swisher, of this county, by which union were born four children: Martha, Emory, James T. and Asa A. In 1864, Mr. Elliott came to this township and located on eighty acres, which are now fairly improved. Although he has been so far successful, he gives much credit to his industry and tenacity. He is a liberal Democrat and he and Mrs. Elliott are members of the M. E. Church.
