Edmond Herman Oliver departed this life on April 22, 1999. He was born in Wolfe County, KY on November 16, 1913.

After working as a farmer and then as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression, Mr. Oliver served with distinction in the U.S. Armed Forces, first in the Marines and then in the U.S. Navy, where he rose from the enlisted ranks to become a lieutenant commander.

During World War II, he served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets, but saw most of his action on the USS Nashville and the USS Dauphin in the Pacific Ocean. After the war, he was a part of Admiral Byrd’s 1949 “Operation Highjump” to Antarctica, and was a veteran of many trips around the Horn. Following his retirement from the military he became sales manager for the Norfolk Stationery Co., where he worked until his final retirement.

Happily married for 49 years and the father of three boys, Mr. Oliver threw himself into a variety of service and charitable activities throughout his life. He was a leader in both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, an active PTA officer at all school levels, a deacon elder and Sunday School teacher at the Willowwoods Presbyterian Church and active in the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia and a longtime volunteer for Navy Family Services. He was a 32nd degree Mason with the St. Helens, Kentucky Masonic Lodge 684 and a member of the VFW and Retired Officers Association.
