Mrs. Mary Black Carter, 60, wife of John B. Carter of Nineveh and one of Greene County's well known women, died Saturday evening, March 18, 1950, at 7:05 in Greene County Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Carter had been a patient in the hospital for a week receiving treatment for a heart condition, but her death came entirely unexpected as her condition had been considered improving.

Born April 26, 1889, in Hays, Allegheny Co., PA she was a daughter of the late David Harrison Black and Matilda "Tillie" Sophia Wilds Black, and had spent most of her life in the Nineveh community.

She was a member of the Nineveh Presbyterian Church, the Missionary Society of the church, the Lady Greene Rebekah Lodge of Waynesburg, American Legion Auxiliary Unit of James Farrell Post No. 330, Waynesburg, Hospital Board of Greene County Memorial Hospital. She was a graduate of Slippery Rock State Teachers college and following her graduation taught in the schools of Nineveh and Pittsburgh until her marriage to John B. Carter, well known farmer and stockman, and former Green County commissioner on January 23, 1911.

Besides her husband she leaves one son, John B. Carter, Jr., at home; one daughter, Mrs. Lois Carter Smith of Daytona Beach, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Cathers of Nineveh, Mrs. Matilda Mulvaney of Waynesburg, and Mrs. Gladys Davidson of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and three brothers, Samuel, Webster and Harry Black, all of Nineveh. A sister Hazel died as an infant.

CARTER - Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Black Carter, wife of John B. Carter, of Nineveh, who died Saturday evening, March 18, 1950, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, will be held at 2 pm Wednesday, March 22, at the family residence, in charge of the Rev. R. L. Biddle, assisted by the Rev. Harry Gardner. Burial will be in Greene County Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the family residence after 2 pm Monday.
