He was a freight house foreman for the Pierre Marquette Railroad, for forty years. He married first in 1895, Maude E Tracy. They had a daughter named Irene in 1896. They were divorced about 1897 and he married second, Lulu M. Bachman, in 1904. He had a step-daughter, Mrs. Lila A Shepperson. He died of a heart attack in 1936.

He was active in the Masonic, Valley City Lodge No. 86, in Grand Rapids. He became a life member in 1935 with 40 years membership, and was in Knights Templar.
