THORNTON. Sept. 4-- Eugene Smith, 73, retired farmer and area resident since 1903, died Wednesday a Pocatello hospital hospital following a lingering illness.

Mr. Smith had made his home in Pocatello for the past year and a half with his daughter, Mrs. Harold H. Bennett.

He was born May 24, 1873 in Logan, Utah, the son of Thomas X and Anne Howe Smith. He spent his early days in Logan and received his education there.

He was married to Ida Chrstiansen of Hyrum, Utah, January 15, 1902 in the Logan LDS Temple. The couple moved to Idaho in 1903 and purchased a home in Lorenzo and for a short time Mr. Smith was engaged in traveling and selling household clothing,

Mr. Smith was among the early homesteaders of Antelope, Idaho and later settled at Independence, near Lorenzo, where the couple lived for more than 40 years.

He was active in community affairs and in the LDS church. He was a member of the high priest quorum in the church at the time of his death.

Survivors Told
His wlfe preceded him in death last year. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Glenice Anderson, Thornton and Mrs. Bennett, Pocatello; 12 grandchildren and one great granddaughter and six sisters, Mrs. Charles Goodsell, Mrs. Leo Kimball, Mrs. Patience Adams, Miss Drew Smith, Miss Alice Smith, all of Logan and Mrs. Mabel Bradford, Salt Lake City

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Rexburg Third Ward Chapel. Blahop T. Royce Moss of Independence will officiate. Interment will be In the Cedar Butte Cemetery. Friends may call at the Flamn Funeral Home until time of services.
