Daughter of George Franklin Thomas and his first wife, Elizabeth Rardin Mintun. Mary accompanied her parents to visit her Thomas grandparents in Mercer county, Pennsylvania in 1846. About 1848, Mary's father sold his interests in Iowa, and moved to New Castle for about 7 years, where he operated a merchant tailoring business. In 1855, the family returned to Wapello, Iowa.

Mary married her husband, Amzi B. White, in Wapello, Iowa on 18 December 1850. Amzi, a native of New Castle, had been living in Wapello for several years. A son, Elmer, and a daughter, Lora, were born to family there. The family later returned to New Castle, where son Norris and daughter Mary Alice were born.

Mary was a charter member of the Epworth M. E., and a member of the First Methodist Episcopal church. She was faithful in attendance and was interested in many activities of the church.

She was survived by her children: Dr. Elmer Thomas White of Chicago, Ill.; Rev. Norris A. White of Franklin; Mrs. Lora (Almon R.) Shaffer and Miss Mary Alice White, of New Castle; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was also survived by her siblings: Mrs. Alice Louisa (John B.) McCullough, of Wapello; Charles B. Thomas, of Buffalo; Albert Curtis Thomas, of Chicago; George Wilbur Thomas, of Carroll, Iowa; and half-sister, Mrs. Grace Hendershott, of Springfield, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1909, her parents, and 6 brothers and sisters.
