George and family traveled to Mercer county Pennsylvania in 1846 to visit his parents. Not long after their return to Iowa, George sold his interest there and moved his wife and two surviving children to New Castle, Lawrence county, Pennsylvania, where he continued the tailoring trade. There, three more children were born to the family. They returned to Louisa county in 1855, with George entering the dry goods business with his brother-in-law, William Keach (husband of Eliza Ann Mintun Keach).
George and Elizabeth together were the parents of 11 children, 8 of whom were born in Wapello. Elizabeth died in 1865. On 15 August 1872, George married Mary Merrill, widow of Emory Jeffries. Together, they were the parents of a daughter, Grace. Mary died on 9 April 1884, probably after having given birth to a son "George" on 1 April 1884.
