LEBANON ENTERPRISE OBITUARY - 03/15/1935
AGED CHICAGO WOMAN DIES - MRS. GILLIE SMITH, 84, SUCCUMBS UNEXPECTEDLY AT HOME SATURDAY NIGHT
Mrs. Gillie Ann Smith, 84 years old, a well known resident of the western part of the county, died Saturday evening about 6:00 o'clock at her home at Chicago. Due to her age, she had been quite feeble for some time but had been in her usual health, and her passing came unexpectedly. Late Saturday afternoon she complained of a pain in her stomach but did not give it serious concern. Less than thirty minutes later she died before a physican could be summoned. Born in this county April 22, 1850, Mrs. Smith was Miss Gillie Ann Ball, daughter of James and Bethana Ballard Ball, both deceased. Most of her life was spent in the Stringtown community, but a number of years ago she moved to Chicago where she had since resided. She was a life long member of the Catholic Church and was a good Christian woman. Mrs. Smith was the widow of James Thomas Smith, who passed away many years ago, and the mother of twelve children, six of who preceded her to the grave. The surviving children are four daughters, Misses Elizabeth and Ella Smith, who resided with their mother; Mrs. Proctor Knott of Chicago and Mrs. Regina Cambron of Loretto, and two sons, P.C. Smith of Louisville and Hugh Smith of Chicago. She is also survived by one brother, Lud Ball of Washington County; two half-brothers, Rad Pash and John Pash, both of Nampa, Idaho; and twenty-two grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at St. Francis Church at Chicago Tuesday morning at 9:00 o'clock by the pastor, the Rev. J. J. Fitzgibbon, and burial was in the church cemetery.
