DAVID J. HUGHES PASSES
David J. Hughes passed away at his home here yesterday, Dec. 19, at 1:30 p.m. after an illness of several weeks, at the age of 95 years, one month, and seven days.
Mr. Hughes was born in Trenton, N.J., on Nov. 12, 1848 and was a son of David and Mary (Dennis) Hughes, both natives of Trenton. He was married in 1873 to Gertrude Dennis in Lewistown, and nine children of this marriage survive, as follows: James Elmer Hughes of Lewistown; Rollie Dale Hughes, Lewistown, David R. Hughes, Independence, Mo.; Eliabeth Gertrude Mustered, Ottawa, Ill.; Horace Albert Hughes, Urbana; Clyde Edward Hughes, Joliet; Flora Bell Leavitt, Miami, Fla.; Julia Agnes Weiraugh, Lewistown; Don Everett Hughes, Sheldon's Grove, Ill. There are many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
On Aug. 22, 1918, in Rushville, Mr. Hughes was united in mrriage with Mrs. Ella Etnnire Matthews, who with six stepchildren survives. There is also surviving, one sister, Mrs. Drucilla Brockett, of Canton.
Mr. Hughes had resided in this state for 76 years, and was according to the time-honored Hughes tradition of one community, a brick mason. he was a member of the Methodist church. He was an estimable citizen and well loved by his neighbors.
The funeral services will be held at the First M. E. church on Thursday, at 2:30 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Paul R. Nestler. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
