George Sowerwine enlisted as a private for 3 years and was mustered into Company G, 2nd California Cavalry, at the Presidio of San Francisco September 27, 1861. Private Sowerwine was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco September 27, 1864. George re-enlisted as a sergeant at Sacramento, California, January 19, 1865, and was mustered into Company A, 2nd California Cavalry, at Camp Union January 21. Sergeant Sowerwine was mustered out at Camp Union April 7, 1866. George filed for a Civil War veteran's pension in Nebraska September 24, 1888, and received application No. 673,489 and certificate No. 749,700. After his death in 1931, Elizabeth filed for a Civil War widow's pension September 21, 1931, and received application No. 1,702,383 and certificate No. A-6-3-32.
