3 Killed Near Dayton Last Tuesday Night
"Three Armstrong County boys died as the result of a two-car accident on Route 839, two miles south of Dayton, about 11:45 p.m. last Tuesday night.
The victims were the operator, James Schrecengost, 19, Rural Valley, and two passengers, Robert E. Brown, 19, R5 Kittanning, and Duane Troup, 17, R3, Dayton, of one of the cars.
Schrecengost died of a fractured neck, Troup of a fractured skull, and Brown of injuries received as he was hurled an estimated 40 yards from the 1935 car in which they were riding. Brown died at the scene, Schrecengost was dead on arrival at the Armstrong hospital, and
Troup died at 2:00 a.m.
Other passengers in the car were Rodney Brown, 19, R3, Dayton, and Jack Easley, R3, Dayton. Easley was only slightly hurt but Brown was hospitalized for treatment of shock and lacerations.
Richard R. Reichard, 16, R2 Mayport, was driving the other car. Passengers were Wilbur McClelland, 18, R2 New Bethlehem, and Otis Kuhns, 18, Smicksburg. None were injured.
Both cars were traveling toward Dayton. Reichard attempted to pass Schrecengost but the Reichard car hit the soft berm and then swerved back ontoothe highway and hooked the bumber of Schrecengost's car, according to police. Both vehicles left the road out of control. The death car turned over several times, it was reported."
