Jess Van Landingham Cooper, 95, Topeka, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at a Topeka hospital.

He was born June 20, 1906, in Louisburg, to Edwin Rinehert and Gertrude Offutt Cooper. He graduated in 1925 from Louisburg High School where he lettered in football, basketball and track. He received a bachelor's degree in engineering from Ottawa University in 1929. He began a career as an educator in Elk Falls, where he taught for a year. He did graduate work at the University of Colorado and the University of Wyoming and received a master's degree from The University of Kansas in Lawrence in 1937.

He was superintendent of schools in Blue Rapids before he moved to Salina, where he was a teacher and later principal of Salina High School. He then worked at Kansas State University on government projects and at The University of Kansas with the V-12 program. He returned to Salina, where he taught at Kansas Wesleyan University.

He moved to Pratt, where he was principal at Pratt Junior High School and then acting superintendent of schools. He was president of Pratt Community College before he retired in 1969 and moved to McPherson. He was an instructor of education at McPherson College. He later was head of the continuing education program at McPherson College. He moved to Topeka last June.

He spent summer months as a crop inspector for 31 years in Kansas, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Wyoming.

He was a member of Wheatland Baptist Church in McPherson and Phi Delta Kappa education fraternity at The University of Kansas. He was a life member of the Kansas and national teachers and administrators associations.

While in Blue Rapids, he was a member of Blue Rapids Lodge No. 169, AF&AM, and Elnora Chapter No. 179 of Order of Eastern Star. While in Pratt, he was a member of the Rotary Club and Country Club and was president of the Music Club.

He married Lucille Crenshaw on June 6, 1930, in Wellington. She died Dec. 31, 1993. He married Gwendolyn Sheffer Smith on April 24, 1997, in McPherson. She died Dec. 14, 2000.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann Ortiz, Topeka; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home in McPherson. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Topeka.
