"The sudden death of Mrs. Jos. Hodges of Erwin was a shock to the whole community. Mrs. Hodges had been suffering from kidney trouble and was taken with appendicitis. An operation seemed necessary and her husband went with her to Sioux City where an operation was successfully performed. Mr. Hodges left her in a comfortable condition and returned home. She was taken worse soon after her husband left and died on Thursday afternoon. The body was brought home and the funeral held at Erwin on Tuesday last. Mrs. Hodges was a daughter of Mr. D. W. Donaldson, of Spirit Lake township. She leaves a husband and seven children, the youngest but three years old, to mourn the death of a devoted wife and mother who is removed just when she is most needed in the home."
