Margaret Alene Sturgis Whitecarver Branton
(December 30, 1922 - January 24, 2010)

VALLEY, Neb. — Margaret Alene Sturgis Branton passed away on Jan. 24, 2010, at her home in Valley, Neb.

She was born on Dec. 30, 1922, to William P. and Ruby (Gandy) Sturgis in rural Galena, Kan.

She attended school at Hickory Grove and graduated from Galena High.

Margaret married Lee Branton on Dec. 12, 1950, in Las Vegas, Nev. Lee passed away in 1995 in Colorado.

They made their home in Bishop, Calif., from 1950 to 1969, before moving to Colorado Springs, Colo., opening "The Sticks and Stones Art Gallery" from 1971 to 1979, in Manitou Springs, Colo., where Margaret was a know artist.

Margaret moved to the Valhaven Nursing Home in Valley, after suffering a stroke on Oct. 6, 1998.

Margaret is survived by sisters, Mildred Simon, of Valley, Jean Clemens, of Granby, Mo., and Marlys Patton, of Tonganoxie, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be Friday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena.

Burial will be in Gandy Cemetery, rural Galena.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
