___

Deceased Was Early Settler of
Lane and Scott Counties
___

Mrs. Joe T. Scott, resident of this county for many years, died at her home in Valley township Friday of last week. She had suffered an attack of influenza which developed into pneumonia, from which she could not survive.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. John A. Scott from First Christian church in this city Monday afternoon at two o'clock, and burial was in the Friend cemetery.

The news of Mrs. Scott's death came as a distinct shock to her many friends, many of whom did not know of her illness. The families of both Mr. and Mrs. Scott are pioneers of this section of the state, and they have a wide acquaintance in Lane and Scott counties.

Mertie Jane Bush, daughter of Milton M. and Mary E. Bush, was born in Vermillion county, Ill., November 5, 1878 and departed this life January 6, 1939, age 60 years, 2 months and 1 day.

When a child, she moved with her parents to Lane county, Kansas in March, 1886 and went through the hardships of the early pioneer life. Here she grew to womanhood and was one of the successful teachers of both Lane and Scott counties for several years. In early life she united with the United Brethren church. In 1900 they moved to southeast Scott county and on June 28, 1905 she was united in marriage to Joe T. Scott. To this union six children were born, two of whom predeeded their mother in death, Alice in 1917 and Joel in 1918.

She was a faithful companion, a loving mother and a kind neighbor and friend to everyone in need.

She leaves to mourn her sudden death her loving husband, three daughters and one son: Mrs. Mary Crowl, Woodward, Okla.; Mrs. Harriet Drake and Mrs. Nellie Sharpe of Scott City, and Dale Leroy of Woodward; four sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Annie Whiting, Scott City; Jake Bush, Battle Ground, Washington; Mrs. Edith Neptune, Garden City; Earl Bush, Scott City; Mrs. Maude Nibert, Wichita; Marshall Bush, Scott City; Mrs. Grace Graham, Shallow Water; nine grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends.
