Duane was born to Lee and Katherine (Brown) Mitchell. He married Wanda Cochran on Sept. 17, 1955, in Charleston, W.Va.

She survives, along with four daughters, Rene` (Rudy) Gater, Charlene (Steven Smoger) Mitchell, Yvonne (Jerome) Rucker and Ava Mitchell; seven sisters, Hazel Couch, Cleo Smith, Opal Sprinkle, Lorraine Sanders, John Ann Lanning, Theda Leighty and LaJuana Hampton; and six grandchildren, Derek, Nicole, Christopher and Danielle Rucker and Alyssa and Shaina Smoger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Giles and Don; and one sister, Inez.

He served in the U.S. Air Force as a Tech Sergeant, retiring after 21 years. He then worked for 22 years at the Federal Aviation Administration as an Electronics Technician.

He was a self-taught musician and loved all types of music. He achieved his pilot's license and loved to fly. He loved working on, building and playing with computers.
