James Moffett was the son of John Moffett and Sarah Hays Moffett, all born in Augusta County, Virginia. He was the grandson of John Moffett, Sr. and Jane Ledgerwood (at North Mountain Burying Ground).

On 31 Mar 1831, Sarah Mitchell married James Moffett at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Augusta County, Virginia. "James Moffett and Sarah Mitchell were licensed & married by Revd Francis McFarland, on 31 March 1831 in Augusta Co., Virginia." Per Familysearch from Film # 007578826, 169/351, original Augusta Co, Virginia Marriage Register.

James married 3 other times:

His father, John Moffett arrived in Ashmore Twp., Coles Co., Illinois in 1838. James, his wife and daughter Cynthia met at the Meeting House (later Hebron Church) on 19 Jun 1841. He served as a First Lieut. in Company H, 3rd Cavalry, Missouri Volunteers.

On the 1850 Hitesville, Coles Co., Illinois census, I found JAMES Moffit (sic), 41; other Moffits: Sarah, 42; Betsy A, 18; Haney C, 17; John M, 15; Sarah V, 13 and Synthia J, 11. Sarah (Sr.) was born in Kentucky and all the rest in Virginia.

On the 1860 Ashmore, Coles Co., Illinois census, I found farmer James Maffett (sic), 50 and female domestic S J Maffett, 21, both Virginia born.

James son in law, Robert Wright, also served as an Illinois volunteer in Company H, 3rd cavalry of the Missouri Volunteers.

On the 1870 Ashmore, Coles Co., Illinois census, I found farmer James Moffett, 61, Virginia; Ann, 40, Virginia; George 4, Illinois and Burly, 2, Illinois. On the 1880 Ashmore, Coles Co., Illinois Census his wife is now widowed, head Eve A. Moffett, 40 (hard to read age), Virginia, George W., 13, Illinois; Burley S., 11, Illinois and Amanda B., 9, Illinois. They live next to John M. Moffett and Charles Wright.

The following is copied from the Portrait and Biographical Album of Coles County, Illinois, Chapman Brothers, Chicago, Illinois, 1887, page 356 says: "He had received a superior education in his native state (Virginia) and spend several years of his early life in teaching."
