In the Harris Memorial Chapel Burying Ground on the Ridge Road between Glen Falls and Lake George is a monument bearing the following inscription:

Moses Harris, 1838
He was a man that was true to his country and his friends. He`was the man that carried the package for Ge. Schuyler and from Gen. Washington to Gen. Schuyler. It went and without doubt was the instrument that put Gen. Burgoyne's journey to an end. He is was, that bought the pattern granted to John Lawrence and others when wild, and settled the same, being 2000 acres, to the benefit of his children and grandchildren. For which I think I ought to do something to his memory.

In June 1787 I moved with two brothers William and Joseph Harris. On to the John Lawrence pattern as you may all see in the record in the Livings office of the County, at that age in 1786, but now I am done with this world and race and none but God shall say where shall be my abiding place.

"Thank you for maintaining the memorial page for Moses Harris Jr. on FindaGrave.com. May I suggest you note John A. Nagy's book, "George Washington's Secret Spy War: The Making of America's First Spymaster", NY 2016, who describes Moses Harris Jr's spy work on pages 183-185, and notes 17-25 on page 321 His book lays to rest the fiction that Moses Harris was a spy in 1777 when Gens. Burgoyne and St. Leger invaded New York from Canada.

Consistent with Moses Harris' revolutionary war pension file the author found Moses' spy activity began in 1781. General Schuyler wrote in 1781 that he knew nothing about Moses Harris before he met him that year. But that doesn't detract from the real story Nagy gives us.

A son and grandson of Moses Harris re-contextualized Moses' spy service, moving it back to 1777, and successfully made him a national hero. Their version of his story was presented in several early guides of the Lake George, New York Area. Now that we have the real story let's let other descendants know what the more accurate version is. Thanks for your work documenting our family history.
