Clara Ferne Hullinger
Funeral services for Clara Ferne Hullinger, age 96, who died at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Missouri on Wednesday, August 12, 1998 were held at the Ritchie Funeral Home on Saturday, August 15, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Nancy Ross officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Services were conducted by the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.
Clara Feme Hullinger was born to James and Mary Jane Green Conner on June 12, 1902, in rural Blockton. On November 14, 1925, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Earl Hullinger in Maryville, Missouri. To this loving union three children were born, Mary, Buss and Bill.
Clara lived in the Bedford area most of her life. She was an avid dancer and met Lloyd at a dance during the Roaring 20's. The Great Depression forced the family off the farmland in 1935; they moved to town. The family then became self-sufficient by tending large gardens, providing food for themselves and selling the surplus to others. Gardening allowed Clara to stay home with her family, a fond memory still held by her children.
She was a member of the Rockhounds of the Bedford Rock Club. She dearly loved to watch harness racing. She supported her children during their athletic years. Family and grandchildren were her main priority and she would always follow, and support their many activities. In later years, Clara was the genealogy resource for the family. She loved to read her Bible and started each day with morning devotions. One of the goals Clara set for herself was to read the Bible cover to cover, which she did at least two or three times. Her favorite book of the Bible was Psalms.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Dowis of Bedford; two sons, Buss and wife Dorla Hullinger of Germansville, Pennsylvania; and Bill and wife Nancy Hullinger of Albert City, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; and nineteen great grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary; her husband Lloyd in 1975; five brothers, George, Warren, Allen
