Verda Mae McDougal Butler Harper, 83, of New Site, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo after an extended illness.

Services were Friday, Nov. 23, at 11 a.m. at McMillan Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Ralph Culp and Bro. Mavous Phifer officiating. Burial was in Forked Oak Cemetery.

Mrs. Harper was a member of Jackson Camp Missionary Baptist Church. She loved music and sang in the choir. She was involved in retail sales and after retirement was a volunteer for Global Outreach in Tupelo and Meals on Wheels in New Site. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Noonan Butler; her second husband, Tom Harper; her parents, John and Algie McDougal; three sisters, Hazel Osborne, Mary Sue Byram and Betty Lambert; and four brothers, James, Earl and Ezra McDougal and Dan Winfield.

She is survived by one daughter, Deloris Butler Finch and her husband, Bill, of Tupelo; one son, Howard Harper of New Site; four sisters, Blanche Gray of Tishomingo, Lela Gamble of Iuka, Maxine Loveless and husband, Roy B., of Booneville, and Ruth Welch and her husband, Leonard, of Henderson, Tenn.; two grandsons, Jeff and John Finch of New Site; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Her nephews were pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.

Her first husband, Noonan Butler, was killed in service to our country in 1944, in France.
