In 1790 Eliphalet recorded his cattle mark at Claremont, NH under the surname of Robinson, but he is enumerated in the 1790 census of that place by the surname of Robertson. While it is evident that Eliphalet Robinson, Jr. and probably his new wife Betsey Wood were, in 1790, residing with his parents, older brother Robert, who m. Hannah Rich at Amherst, Mass. in 1787, is shown separately as Robert Robertson in the same 1790 Claremont census. Thereafter at Claremont this family's surname alternates back and forth between written as Robinson and Robertson. In early federal censuses, the surname Robinson was often miswritten as Robertson.
