Mr. Holmes was a native of Grigsby, moving to Port Arthur in 1918. He went to work for Texaco where he was Captain of the pleasure boat, Henrietta. Retiring in 1964, he moved to his home in Woodville where he raised cattle. He then moved back to Port Arthur to be near his children after his health began to fail.
Survivors included his wife, Jewel Allen Holmes; one son, William A. Holmes; and two daughters, Margaret English and Dorothy Borel Lumpkin; three brothers, Jethro, Corbit and A.D. Holmes; two sisters, Millie Falgout and Mavie Blankenship; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death was his brother Jappie.
