The book "Stephens County: Much to be Cherished - 1987" published by the Breckenridge/Stephens County Sesquicentennial Committee (also known as the "Gold Book") calls him Howard Hughes Mehaffey.

He married Eddith Roberson in 1923 at Comanche, TX.

Survived by six sons - Aaron, Howard, Maurice, Joe, Claude and Terry; four daughters - Estrella Cooper, Lorese Russell, Sue Thompson and Janice Bacon; five brothers - Rodolph, Andrew, Bill, Glen and Nathan; one sister - Clara Thompson; 32 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
