Joseph "Albert" Davenport was born Nov. 7, 1905, in Grizzly Bluff, Humboldt County, California, to Albert Roy and Amy Ida (Goble) Davenport. He died Jan. 8, 2003, in Myrtle Point.

He was the eldest of 11 siblings. Around 1900, his grandparents, Joseph and Elizabeth Davenport, came to Coos County. They helped each of their children obtain a ranch in this area. A, R, (Bert) and Amy's ranch was on Catching Creek. Albert completed the eighth grade and then assisted his father in the operation of the farm. On Dec. 23, 1928, he married Verna Myrtle Hart, a teacher in the local Twin Oaks School. They bought the adjoining ranch, which was also in the family and they have farmed there ever since.

He is survived by his brother, Ernest Davenport of Dundee; four sisters, Audrey Holt of Murphy, Dolores Larsen of Broadbent, Lila Ocheltree of Myrtle Point, and Lois Jensen of Beaverton; five daughters and their spouses, Jerene Price, Jeanne and Marvin Hammack, Mary Ellen and Dave Robertson and Peggy Shirtcliff, all of Myrtle Point, and Jody and John Root of Roseburg; grandchildren, Vic Hammack and Toni Fults of Myrtle Point, Ray Shirtcliff, Denise Sturgill, Ted and Randy Robertson and Jennifer Walker, all of Eugene, Traci Hammack of Springfield, Jerry Root of Roseburg, Jamie Root of Las Vegas, Tim Robertson of Crestview Hills, Ky., and Angela Broer of Meridian, Idaho; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna Hart Davenport in 1979; infant daughter Delores; parents, Bert and Amy Davenport; brothers, Harold, Rodney and Lloyd "Duke" Davenport; and sisters, Bernice Haughton and Mary Garcelon.
