Paul Hartner was a farmer. His family was active in the local Zion Lutheran Church, which he helped found, and where the cemetery is located. Sons Henry and Harlan both entered the ministry.

A source reports that when the membership was transferred to Clay Center in 1947 the church building was moved to the Hartner farm nearby. Some members were understandably unhappy when son Bill made a tool shed from the former church.
