Husband of Mary Sophrina Wrinkles McKinney

Mercer McKinney, a native of Georgia, was reared in Tennessee, and by occupation was a farmer. He died in Harris County, Texas, January 11, 1863. He was an active politician, but never asked office for himself. At the beginning of the late war he opposed secession and used his influence to keep his State in the Union, but after it seceded he went with it, and gave it his active sympathy and support until his death. His wife, whose name before marriage was Miss Sophronia Wrinkles, was a native of Natchitoches Parish, Louisana, and a daughter of Abraham Wrinkles, who was for many years a prosperous planter of that State. She died in Harris county, Texas, June 7, 1892 at the age of sixty-nine years.
They moved to Texas in 1857, settleing in Harris County where the family resided until the death of Mr. McKinney, which was superindused by exposure in the Confederate service guarding Federal prisoners in 1862. The surviving widow with her children moved to Harris county shortly afterwards and has resided here continueously up to the hour her death, the past few years in this city.

Mortuary Notice
Died--At his residence, near Gentry, Texas, on the morning of the 12th of January, Mercer McKinney, aged 50 years. We have seldom taken up our pen to record a sadder event than to pay this tribute to a true friend. As a kind husband and father, an honest neighbor, and patriotic citizen, he was the esteem of all. He has left a devoted wife and several children to mourn his loss. May he who holds the destinee of mankind, shield them from the rude blasts of adversity. His death was very sudden, and his last wish was to be by the side of his sons in our army battling for the holy cause of Southern Independence.
