Mercer married Catherine "Katie" L. Karcher (1854-?) on either October 21, 1871 or November 9, 1871 in Harris County, Texas. They were the parents of the following known children:

Edward Jackson McKinney (1873-1937)
Charles Alva McKinney (1876-1920)
Daisy Dean McKinney Minor (1880-1948)

Bettie Thomas (1862-?), lived with him as domestic help after the death of his wife. She was possibly a black woman, who had been born a slave of the family.

He later married Lula Alice Sapp from Alabama (the daughter of H. T. Sapp, or possibly Thomas Hilliard Sapp ID# 7581407) on October 1, 1889 in Harris County, Texas. They were the parents of the following known children:

Mercer Lartwell McKinney Jr. (1892-1952)
Myrtle McKinney Brubaker (1894-1963)

Mercer died in a fight in a Houston restaurant on a Saturday night. From the Houston Post: "Mercer L. McKinney, brother of County Assessor McKinney, went into Miller's Restaurant in the market and became involved in a row with a waiter thought to be named Harrell (actually his name was N. J. Heron, of Iowa). Heron threw McKinney on the sidewalk with such force that he crushed his skull and death resulted today. Heron is held for murder. Interment will take place about three miles from the city on White Oak where deceased has some of his family buried."

The newspaper article makes me think that he was buried at Hollywood Cemetery near White Oak Bayou, where all three of his sisters and his second wife were later buried. However, there is no record of his burial there, and Hollywood Cemetery supposedly wasn't opened until 1895, two years after his death. So, I can't be certain of where he was buried.
