Archibald Smitten was born in Dundee Scotland, in 1780; landed at Philadelphia in 1820, and located in 1823, on the Smitten homestead, North Mahoning township. He was a stone mason by occupation. He died about 1856. His first wife, Jane, was born in Scotland and died prior to his immigration to the United States. His second wife, Mrs Hannah Thompson, widow of Thomas Thompson.
His children were: Agnes and Jane, who stayed in Scotland with relatives; Sarah, married to Isaac Simpson; John Y married in 1846 to Martha A. Walls, died in 1847 and married second in 1848 to Nancy Ann McComb; Evaline married George S. Haney, Mary Ann married first to John Mitchell, and second to William Mahan and Archibald married Mary J. Sparr.
