Born in the Kingdom of Prussia in 1828. Emigrated to the United States and landed in New Orleans, Louisiana in Jan. 1847. Received his citizenship in Louisville, KY on Wed., 20 Oct. 1852.

William married Maria Kehrman on 21 May 1850. Ceremony was performed by the pastor of Immaculate Conception of St. Mary's Church, 422 S. Eight Street (corner of Grayson, now Cedar St.). The parish of the Immaculate Conception of St. Mary was established in the basement of the Cathedral in Jan.1846, and here in a chapel, services were held until the Church was completed. The congregation was formed principally for those of German descent. The church was closed in the 1930's and the building razed in 1946.

William bought property from Wm. Preston and built on the property in 1852 or 1853. Building is standing at this writing - see picture taken in 2000 (714 E. Madison). The house is narrow, 22 foot lot. Talked to man making repairs and he said the brick walls were sixteen inches thick. William was a Cartman (1851-2 City Directory). William and Maria moved to a farm in the Newburgh Road Beargrass Creek area. He was shown on the 1860 census as a Dairyman.

William died in 1863. His estate consisted of 43 cows, bull, heifer, mule, 6 horses, stud horse, milk wagons, etc., (Sale Bill 32, Page 497). Click on picture of cemetery listing for description of burials. The only stones on the lot are Wilhelm Stuckenberg and Josephine Leising Beckmann.
