Drowned at Jacksonport

A sailor was drowned at Jacksonport about the midnight hour last Saturday. The sailor, whose name is Geo. Hartnell, was one of the crew of the hooker Elva, and had indulged pretty freely in strong drink during the day at Jacksonport, although, it is said, he was far from being in a helpless condition. He was requested to remain ashore until morning but would not, remarking that the men aboard the boat might need the one yawl boat which he came ashore in, in the meantime, and afterwards put out from shore to go aboard his boat, which was anchored in the harbor. In getting aboard the hooker was when the accident occurred. It seems that he had brought the yawl up alongside and while standing with his hands grasping the rail of the hooker, the boat he was in took an awkward sheer and he fell into the water and struck out to swim for the boat. The captain, who was on deck at the time, saw the accident and threw Hartnell a line which he did not succeed in grasping, and shortly after sank below the surface and was not seen to rise again. The following morning the body was found on the beach and taken in charge by Herbert Messenger, the town constable.
Later the body was brought to this city and an inquest held before justice of the peace, Jacob Dehos, although the proper place for such a proceeding was at Jacksonport. The verdict of the jury was that the man came to his death by accidental drowning while under the influence of liquor.
Geo. Hartnell was 32 years of age and a resident of Salem, where the remains were shipped to his relatives by rail for interment.
