Joe was born Dec. 5, 1870 in Friedenstal, Bessarabia, Russia to Johann and Barbara (Reuter) Stahlecker. His family came to the United States in 1873 when he was three years old.

He married Maria (Mary) Zeitner on Nov. 30, 1892 at Tripp, South Dakota. They lived on various farms around Naper and Jamison, Nebraska. They also lived at Chase, British Columbia, Canada. They moved to Gregory, South Dakota where he had a horse-powered house-moving business. While living in Delmont, South Dakota, he ran a livery and dray business. They also worked in the orchards in Idaho for a short time. They retired in Naper in 1938.

Joe is survived by his wife, Mary; 5 sons, Albert, Herman, Walter, Henry and Harold; 3 daughters, Alvina, Anna and Clara; 26 grandchildren; 60 great grandchildren; and 58 great-great grandchildren.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Richard and Harold.
