Civil War veteran and Illinois farmer.

Isaac Painter, son of Andrew and Catherine Painter, was born in 1837 in Ohio, probably in Clark County, where his family was enumerated in 1840 and 1850. By the late 1850s, he moved to Champaign County, Illinois, where his father and brother George also moved.

Isaac Painter and Mrs. Barbara Ann McLain (née Hillsberry) were married on 10 July 1859 in Champaign County. She brought her three sons* into the marriage; with Isaac she would have three more children: John Wesley, Alice, and Isaac Sherman. Isaac and Barbara Painter's household was enumerated in 1860 in that county. He was a laborer on his father-in-law Harmon Hillsberry's farm in East Bend Township, and inherited a portion of the farm upon the latter's death in 1862.

Isaac Painter enlisted as a private for one year's service on 23 February 1865, and mustered the same day in Company I, 155th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. According to his enlistment papers, Isaac was a farmer, age 26, born in Clark County, Ohio. He was 6 feet, 1 inch tall; had black hair, blue eyes, and a fair complexion. (Among those who also enlisted and mustered into Company I on the same day was his wife's brother, Moses Hillsberry.) Private Painter's regiment guarded a railroad in Tennessee, and he mustered out with his regiment on 4 September 1865. Afterwards, Isaac Painter returned to his family and farming in Illinois. He was sometimes called Isaac Painter, senior, to distinguish him from his younger son, Isaac Sherman Painter, known as Isaac Painter, junior.

Barbara A. Painter died in 1897 in Champaign County, and was buried there at Willowbrook Cemetery. Although Isaac also had his name inscribed on the marker, expecting to live his remaining years in Illinois, he moved in 1913 with his younger son's family to Gratiot County, Michigan, where he died in 1919 at age 82½ and was buried.

Philip H. Robinson, and
Samuel McClain.

Notes

Isaac Painter's 10 May 1837 date of birth, as reported on his death certificate, appears to be correct. A surprise party for Isaac Painter, senior, on his 66th birthday was held on 10 May 1903 at his son Isaac's home. ("Dewey," The Champaign County News, Champaign, Illinois, 16 May 1903, p. 5, col. 2.)
Step-son Philip Robinson was among the guests.

Isaac Painter was born in Ohio, but in which county is a bit uncertain. His father in 1836 paid a tax in Richland County, and in 1840 was enumerated in Clark County. Isaac Painter himself, in this enlistment papers, stated Clark County as his birth place.
