In 1950 he began working for the Ocean Springs Fire Department part time. In 1965 he began working full time and upon the death of Fire Chief Bernard Beaugez he became Fire Chief May 6, 1969, a position he held until his retirement in November 1973.
During his tenure he oversaw the construction of the Beaugez Fire Station on Old Hwy. 90 and the then new Emergency Services complex (today the police station) was weeks from completion when he retired.
Following his retirement he continued active in the fire service, participating in the Ocean Springs Volunteer Fire Department.
His son, Leanard Allen, Jr continued his tradition and worked on the paid Ocean Springs Fire Department and was at one time Chief of the Ocean Springs Volunteers
