Death last night at 8:30 o'clock closed the life of one of Hutchinson county's most prominent and active pioneers, S.J. Board, Sr., 76, the second sheriff of this county. He died at his home in White Deer.

The well known pioneer came to this county in 1885 to work on the old 22 ranch. In 1898 he settled in this county, working for the Matador ranch until his election as sheriff in 1904. Billy Dixon, famous Indian fighter, was the first sheriff.

During those wild unruly days Mr. Board faithfully and conscientiously served as sheriff for three terms, until 1910.

Then he turned his efforts to developing his ranch in the northwest part of the county. This territory has been his property since 1905.

Tentative funeral arrangements are set for 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Pringle school auditorium, with Masons from White Deer and Stinnett assisting with the services, at which the Rev. Cole, Baptist pastor of White Deer, will officiate. Board was a life member of the Stinnett Masonic body. Interment will be in Lieb cemetery, under direction of the Powell Funeral Home of Borger.

Besides the widow, survivors include seven children, Lex L. Board of Skellytown, S.J. Board, Jr., of Morse, Zela Mathison of White Deer, Mrs. Jane Farris of Plainview Mrs. Eunice Eiland of Long Beach; a brother, J.H. Board of Fort Worth; a sister, Mrs. Alice Reagan of Ft. Worth.

Among other survivors are seven grandchildren, S.J. Mathison of White Deer, Billy Stamps of Morse, Mrs. Thelma Goe of Long Beach, Mrs. Denzil Johnson of San Pedro, Calif., Miss Orin Mathis of Skellytown, Jo Ann Board and Nancy Board of Borger.
