July 1942 photo of Jerome Kounitz, age 25 - In uniform. Part of the "Greatest Generation" millions live in freedom today because of their sacrifices. He is greatly missed by his family.

1988 photo of Jerome Kounitz, age 71 - location; Cloisters Museum, NYC, NY. He loved Manhattan, his home town. He always stated, "if you could make it here, you could make it anywhere."

This type of weapon (the feared German 88mm) wounded him in Holland 1944 during a shelling event. He stated several rounds hit near his fox hole but failed to explode. He gave credit to sabotage by slave labor in the German Arms works for that.

At 27 years old he was considered aged since the average age for WWII infantry was much younger. Most were late teens or early twenties. He served with great pride that he had helped defeat Hitler's Nazi Army.

On a pass in Paris, still in combat clothing...note white helmet for winter operations. Also, he became a very heavy smoker after his discharge which contributed to his health's decline in later years. He had C.O.P.D. in his 70s.
