Mary Jane Merys was born 30 Mar 1861 in Potsdam, New York; daughter of James Timothy and Sarah (Brimson) Merys.

Mary Jane was first united in marriage with Fred Walter Cook in 1878. Mary Jane and Fred were the parents of four children:

1. Lucinda (1880-1900) married Richard Longfield. She died at the Cook County Hospital from burns and shock received when her clothes accidentally caught fire while fumigating a house. She was a newlywed, married but three months. She's buried in Forest Home Cemetery, Forest Park, Cook County, ILL.

2. George Sumner, born 1881 Mass. died Kansas City 1923. Buried Forest Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, Jackson County, MO.

3. Gertrude Mable (1883-1965), married Joseph Ezra Travis in 1899 Chicago.

4. James William Henry born 1888 Mass. died 1953. Buried Arlington National Cemetery, Washington DC.

Mary Jane was married a total of five times, outliving each husband:

1st husband - Frederick "Fred" Walter Cook (1859-1927) buried Forest Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, Jackson County, MO.

2nd husband - Joshua Owen (1862-1934) buried Oakwood Cemetery, Joilet, Will County, IL.

3rd husband - Thomas L. Field (1853-1915). Jumped off a bridge into the Des Plaines River in Forest Park, IL and drowned. Buried in Forest Home Cemetery, Forest Park, Cook County, IL.

4th husband- Alfred John Hampson (1855-1926) died in Minooka and is buried in Aux Sable Cemetery.

5th and last husband James Whitfield (1861-1936) buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Bureau County, IL with his first wife who was also his first cousin.
