UNCLE JIMMY IS DEAD
---
The Well Known Citizen Commits Suicide New Years Day.

Uncle Jimmy Merys committed suicide New Years afternoon at 4 o’clock by shooting himself in the heart. He died instantly.

Mr. Merys was in the workshop back of the house at the time he fired the fatal shot. Some young men heard it and went to the shop, but he was dead when they reached him. He was carried to the house and medical aid summoned, but life was extinct.

Uncle Jimmy Merys was one of the best known citizens of this town. He had an outside an acquaintance second to none. He was in charge of the North college for twenty-one years and was known as the student’s friend. He was personally known to more students than any other man on the hill, except possibly the chancellor. He severed his connection with the university about a year ago and was preparing to go to Oklahoma to reside in the spring.

Mr. Merys has been despondent ever since he left the university, but so far as known did not previously contemplate taking his own life. He was in the World office along the first of the week and seemed to have as keen an interest in public affairs future then and did not seem any as ever. He talked hopefully of the more despondent than usual.

The death of Mr. Merys will cause widespread sorrow, because so many of the students remember the old man pleasant recollections. The shot took effect in his heart and he seems to have died instantly.
The funeral arrangements will be announced later.

JAMES MERYS A SUICIDE
---
Took His Life With a Revolver Yesterday Afternoon

James Merys, for many years a janitor at the university of Kansas, and custodian of the north college building, committed suicide yesterday afternoon by shooting himself just below the heart with a .32 caliber revolver. Despondency because of ill health and loss of his position is believed to have been the cause for the act.

Shortly after 3 o’clock Mr. Merys, who lives on south Kentucky street, took his watch from his pocket, laid it down in the house, went to a shed in the rear of the house, and there fired the shot which ended his life. Some young men across the alley heard the shot, and rushing to the spot, found Mr. Merys. He was carried into the house, and died by the time he reached there.

Mr. Merys was very well known in Lawrence. Coming to this country from England, he held for many years, the position on the ill, but increasing age made a change necessary last summer, and he never got over that. Added to this was rheumatism, which bothered him greatly, and he had many times remarked to his family that he would be better off out of the way. Constant brooding led, probably, to the sad ending of his life yesterday.

The funeral of J.T. Merys, who died as a result of self-inflicted pistol wound on New Year’s day, occurred this afternoon at 2 o’clock from the house on south Kentucky street. The services were conducted by Rev. Dr. R. Cordley, and a large number of friends and neighbors attended. The burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.
