Robert P. Chapman was born in Vermillion County, Ill., Oct. 25, 1839 and departed this life Jan. 3, 1931, aged 91 years, 2 months, and 9 days.

In 1851, he moved to Clark County and lived on the northeast corner of the forty he departed this life on.

In 1861, Lincoln called for soldiers and on the 15th of Sept., Mr. Chapman volunteered for 3 years, and was assigned to Colonel Grant's regiment. Later, it was General Grant. He served his time and was honorably discharged on Nov. 1, 1864.

Dec. 29th 1864, he was married to Sarah Jane Smith, who died Jan. 20, 1925. To this union was born 12 children, 8 sons and 4 daughters. Four children preceded him in death - Nora Alice, Katy May, Minetta A., and Dennis R. Those living are: George W., Henry O., Thomas J., Albert M., William H., John F., Chester A., and Myrtie Shanks. Besides raising his large family , he raised 3 grandchildren. Besides these, he has 47 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Derritt and Rollan.

Rev. J. A. Stout conducted the funeral services, assisted by Rev. Goddard at Wesley Chapel Church. The Annapolis American Legion was in charge of the burial.
