Iver Hason Hvinden was born on 15 Nov 1864 at Gran, Hadeland, Norway of parents Hans Olson and Agnetta Hvinden and was baptized and confirmed in the Gran Kirke by Pastor Lykken. He emigrated from Norway to the United States in 1884 arriving on 6 Jul 1884 at Hickson, ND where he was employed the next three years on a farm belonging to his cousin, Egbert Gilbertson. Following the stream of homestead seekers he went west from there filing on a homestead in South Viking township of Benson County, ND, where he was engaged in farming for the next 20 years. In the fall of 1891 he was united in marriage to Miss Louise Rosendahl, the daughter of Engebrect Olsen Rosendahl and Kari Pedersdatter Ingebretson (Rosendahl). The wedding ceremony was performed at Moorhead, MN. To this union six children were born, four of whom died in infancy. Two sons by this marriage are surviving, namely Elmer Hvinden of Grand Forks, ND and Harry Hvinden of Hendrum, MN. During the years Mr. Hvinden was engaged in farming and took a very active part in all public and community affairs and was one of the charter members of the Viking Lutheran Church. He held the position of Klokker there for several years and was a member of the church choir. His wife passed away on 25 Jan 1906 and the following fall he moved to Flora, ND, where he had secured a job as grain buyer, becoming the manager of the Farmers Elevator Company a position which he held for a period of 25 years. On 30 Jul 1908 he was married to Miss Maren Pederson of Flora with Rev. H. H. Frost reading the marriage rituals. To this union four children were born, namely, Ruby Amanda Hvinden, Oliver Hvinden, Agnes Helinda Hvinden and Helen Cora Hvinden. At Flora he was also active in church, school and social work, being a member of the school board a number of years and a member of the Flora Evangelical Church. The last few years his health failed and he was no longer able to attend to his duties at the elevator and he remained at his home in Flora. He became quite seriously ill the early part of October in 1939 and he was brought to the Maddock Hospital, where he has made his home since. He has been able to be up and about most of the time during the past year and death came suddenly, due to a stroke on 18 Oct 1940 at the age of 75 years, 11 months and 3 days. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, 22 Oct 1940 at the Flora Church at 1:30 p.m. and at the Viking Lutheran Church at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. G. R. Estrem officiating at both places. Honorary pallbearers were J. B. Ashford, Joe Rehling, Ed Thompson, Ole Bergsgaard, Andrew Elken and Abraham Faleide. Active pallbearers were Herman Hvinden, Oscar Hvinden, Elmer Hvinden, Alvin Liudahl, Henry Liudahl and Theodore Liudahl all nephews of the deceased. Mr. Hvinden leaves to mourn his demise, three sons and three daughters, namely: Elmer Hvinden of Grand Forks, ND, Harry Hvinden of Hendrum, MN, Mrs. Melvin (Ruby) Whipple of Chicago, IL, Oliver Hvinden of Bismarck, Mrs. Elmer (Agnes) Aanderud of Maryville, WA and Mrs. Lyle (Helen) Peterson of Maddock.
