OBITUARY:
(Sycamore True Republican)
Joseph Keithline Gross, son of George and Mary Gross, was born in Luzerne county, Penn., Aug. 24, 1833, and passed from this life at the home of his son James at Davis Junction early Wednesday morning, April 2, at the age of over 90 years. He was the eldest and last member of a family of six children. When he was six years of age the family located near Muncy, Penn., where his father died when the son was 12 years of age. A little later he served an apprenticeship as a blacksmith, in the meantime attending school whenever possible. As he was a faithful student he soon fitted himself as a teacher and taught school a few terms before coming to Illinois. In 1858 he came to DeKalb county, taught for awhile and attended Jennings Seminary at Aurora. Later he worked as a carpenter until his marriage to Miss Jennie Dimon on Dec. 25, 1866. They then settled on their farm in Mayfield township. There they made their home until the spring of 1901 when they moved to Kingston. Four years ago their advancing years compelled them to go to the home of their daughter Mrs. Frank King, who was devoted to their care.
The wife and mother died on Christmas day, 1921.
About two months ago Mrs. King's health failed and Mr. Gross was taken to the home of his son James where his long and useful life ended. Early in life Mr. Gross became a Christian and was faithful in his belief, helping to build up Bethel church in Mayfield and later the Methodist church at Kingston. He was a ready and willing worker, doing whatever his hands found to do. He was active in the Sunday school and taught a bible class until he was past his 80th year. Mr. Gross was a man of strong convictions religiously, morally and politically and was a great reader and student. He graduated with honors from the Chautauqua reading circle at the age of 67.
Surviving him are two of his three children: James of Davis Junction and Mrs. Nellie King of Mayfield; six grandchildren, besides many other relatives and numerous friends.
The funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Methodist church, Rev. J. V. Madison, officiating and burial was in Kingston cemetery.
Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Millard Gross, Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Shaffer, Mr. and Mrs. E. Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mattison and Mrs. Lydia Stafford of Sycamore; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hoffman of Genoa; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Rousch and Mr. and Mrs. Chellis Vandeburg of Rockford; Mr. and Mrs. James Gross of Davis Junction.
