Orangeburg - Services for Dr. harry Basil Arant Jr., 71, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home, with burial in New Hope Methodist Church, Rowesville. Rev. Chuck Wells will officiate.

Active pallbearers will be Scott Wright, Al Fischer, Steve Cumbee, David Burlington, Danny Syphrett and Frank Jervey. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the residence and other times at the funeral home.

Dr. Arant died Monday at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born in Orangeburg, he was a son of the late Harry Basil Arant and Leona Lightfoot Arant. He attended Elloree High School and graduated from Albany High School in Albany, Ga. He attended Auburn University and the University of Florida, graduated from Clemson University and the University of Maryland Dental School with honors. Dr. Arant was a member of Gorgas Fraternity and Psi Omega.

Dr. Arant was a retired dental surgeon after 32 years of service, where he was chief of dental staff at Orangeburg Regional Hospital. He was a pioneer in securing services for the mentally retarded for 40 years. Dr. Arant served as president of OARC and worked the State Association of the Retarded as a board member. He was a member of Edisto Dental Study Group. Dr. Arant was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force Communications Division. Dr. Arant was a member of New Hope Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for 25 years.

Surviving are his wife, Florence "Flo" Bonnett Arant of the home; son, Harry Basil Arant III of Orangeburg; daughters, Kathryn Anne (Steve) Cumbee of Orangeburg, Lib (David) Burlington of Travelers Rest, Deryl (Paul) Turner of Orangeburg; sister, Vivian (Donald) Wright of Spartanburg; four grandchildren.
