Information from NC Death Certificate for Lizzie Caroline Whittington
Sister of Ellen Ann Yates, who was 1st wife of Thomas Settle Whittington. Ellen died in 1879 at age 27 and left 3 small children under 7yo. Lizzie married her brother-in-law Thomas Settle Whittington in 1884 and helped raised the children (who were her nieces/nephews and her step-children). He died in 1885.
The December 30, 1928 edition of the Greensboro Daily News included:
Mrs. Lizzie Whittington Dies At Daughter's Home
Mrs. Lizzie C. Whittington, widow of Prof. Thomas S. Whittington died at the home of her daughter [actually step-daughter/niece], Mrs. M. C. Groome, at Groometown, yesterday. Death was due to influenza and the infirmities of old age, being 79 years old. She had lived with her daughter here since the latter's marriage. She was widely known as "Aunt Lizzie".
Mrs. Groome and E. M. Whittington of Birmingham, Ala., stepchildren, survive. There also are 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral will take place at the Groome church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock.
