Mrs. Ellen A. Whittington wife of Rev. T. S. Whittington, and daughter of Henry and Nancy Yates, departed this life at her home in Jonesville, Yadkin county N.C. Dec. 5th 1879, aged 27 years.

She was converted in the Fall of 1867, at a protracted meeting held by C. H. Phillips on the Guilford Circuit, and joined the M.E. Church South in which she continued a consistent, worthy and useful member, until the Master said it is enough come up higher.

Sister Whittington was truly a model woman. In all the relations of her life she acted well her part. As a member of society, she was intelligent, kind, affable, sustaining well her position with her husband in the higher walks of life. As a friend, she was confiding and constant; as a member of the church exemplary and active, taking the greatest pleasure in making others happy, and especially was it always her delight to take care of, and refresh, the labor and care worn Prophet of the Cross. In her family relations she shone the brightest, there she was truly a star of the first magnitude, so wise, so prudent, so kind, so tender, so affectionate. Indeed it seemed, that she was just every thing a Christian wife and mother should, or could be. God bless her memory!

Sister Whittington died of rapid consumption, but a few months before her death she was in the bloom of health, with a bright prospect of yet many years of life and health, but oh, how rapidly she wasted away! During her illness her trust was firm in God her Savior. For a while she [was?] hopeful, but life had no farther charms than to be useful, and assist her husband in bringing up their three dear little children for the Lord. But when the time of departure came, she was not only resigned, but ready. God came to her in her last moments. He came not in the thunder, or the storm, or the whirlwind, but in the still small voice; like the sun slides serenely down the Western slope, and sends back a halo of golden beauty, she passed away without a struggle, without a groan, without a sigh, without a frown. The angel of the everlasting covenant, seemed to kiss her pure spirit away, and leave a placid smile to sit upon the marble lip. "How blest the righteous when they die." S. D. Peeler
