Miss Sell, who taught school in Sangamon county for over fifty years, was born in Gettysburg, Pa., September 20, 1842. She came to this city at an early age and after graduating from Springfield high school she started teaching in the public schools and later was vitally interested and connected with the movement for the education of the colored race, which had just begun to move north.
In 1863 she began teaching in the Trapp school, where she taught for more than thirty years. She retired about fourteen years ago on a pension.
She is survived by two nephews, who live in St. Louis; and four nieces, Mrs. Edward Sell, who lives at the Leland hotel; Mrs. Joseph Hunter of San Diego, Calif.; Mrs. Clementine Banks of Tennessee; and Mrs. J. Kent Reiser of Clairton, Pa.
