Sell-At his home, 521 North Fifth street, Tuesday, Feb 6, 1901, at 3 a.m., from a severe attack of la grippe, after a protracted illness, Ambrose J. Sell, aged 73 years.
With the demise of Mr. Sell, one of the oldest charter members of Grace Lutheran church and an active member of the official staff of that church in this city, has been erased from the history of the living, and placed in a prominent position with that of the dead. For the latter half of the recent century he was actively engaged in business in this city and has been respected as a peaceful and enterprising citizen.
Ambrose J. Sell was born in Hanover, Pa., Dec. 1, 1827, and is descended from hearty German stock. He was reared on a farm and resided for a number of years near Gettysburg, Pa. In April 1851, he came to Springfield, which has since been his home. He was apt and soon secured a position with the firm of James L. Lamb, where he clerked several years in the general store conducted by the firm. Later he was employed by Isaac Hawley in the same business and before 1859 he secured a competent trade of his own and embarked in the grocery business in a small store located at 519 North Fifth street. Since that time he has been actively engaged in the grocery business at that stand, which at the present time, adjoins his residence, apart, however, from the remainder of the city business life and surrounded by residences.
June 16, 1859, he was married to Miss Susan E. Hickman, of Kentucky and his widow still survives him, aged 67 years. He also leaves one son, Dr. E. A. Sell, of this city; four sisters, Clementine E. Sell, Alma A. Sell, Mary J. Sell, all of Springfield, and Mrs. E.M. Kuhl, of Macomb, and one brother, Walter E. Sell, of Berkeley, Cal.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Grace Lutheran church. The services will be conducted by the Rev. A.P. Stover, pastor of the Kumler Methodist church. The interment will be at Oak Ridge cemetery.
