Benjamin Slane Jr was born 4/22/1798 near Winchester, Virginia to Benjamin Slane Sr (1773-1842) and what was believed to be a local Cherokee woman, who died during or just after Benjamin Slane Jr's birth. Benjamin Slane Sr was an officer in the Virginia militia and was patrolling that area to protect the residents against hostile Delaware Indians. His father married Delilah Poston 3 years later and she raised Benjamin Jr along with 12 half-brothers and half-sisters.
Benjamin Slane Jr. married Delilah Cheshire on June 7, 1824 in Hampshire County, Virginia and they eventually had 7 children. In 1830 Benjamin and Delilah, along with their 3 oldest children, left Hampshire County, Virginia by team and wagons for Perry County, Ohio where he had relatives. Two neighboring families from Virginia - Jonathan Nixon and William Nixon (not related) - were already there. He stayed in Somerset, Ohio for a year, engaging in the tannery business while there. In 1831, the Benjamin Slane family along with both Nixon families left for Peoria (known as Ft. Clark then) in Illinois. They traveled down the Muskingum River by flatboat to Marietta, Ohio. From there they traveled west on the Ohio River in a "keel" boat to Cincinnati, Ohio. From there they continued on two different steamboats through Louisville to St. Louis, Missouri. They obtained a sternwheeler steamboat there to travel up the Illinois River to Ft. Clark (Peoria) where they arrived in November 1831. Benjamin was eventually joined in Peoria County, Illinois by 6 of his siblings.
Four additional children were born to Benjamin & Delilah after arriving in Illinois, 2 while living in or near the town of Peoria, and 2 more after moving about 15 miles west to Rosefield Township near Edwards Station, Illinois in 1835. In 1839, Delilah died 3 days after giving birth to their last daughter, who died at one month old. Elizabeth Nixon, wife of the afore mentioned Jonathan Nixon, took on the task of raising the remaining 6 children. In 1840, the Nixons accompanied Benjamin Slane and his family 15 miles north to Princeville, Illinois with Elizabeth continuing the job of raising the children there through at least 1850.
Benjamin Slane died April 28, 1875 in Princeville and was returned to the Slane cemetery west of Edwards, IL where his wife had been buried in 1839.
