Wayne Lawrence was announced as Hereford's "Citizen of the Year" for 1959 during the annual Deaf Smith county Chamber of Commerce banquet Thursday night
A devoted youth worker, Lawrence became the 14th recipient of the annual Lions Club award. Boss Lion Labry Ballard made his surprise presentation to Lawrence before a crowd of 698 persons. Lawrence helped organize the annual Veterans of Foreign Wars toy campaign for underprivileged children several years ago and has been a key worker in the annual toy drive since its inception. He also is serving as a Scoutmaster in Hereford. Lawrence has served as an officer and director in the Hereford Athletic Club and helped organize the Junior olympic swimming team in Hereford last summer. Since the city pool closed last fall he has been taking the junior swimmers to the West Texas State College indoor pool in Canyon each weak for instructions. In addition to his youth work, Lawrence also has served the local VFW post as Commander. He is a member of the Lions Club and the Methodist Church.
"Mr and Mrs Lawrence have no children of thier own", Ballard told the audience, "but they feel that all of the children in Hereford belong to them"

Footnote in the paper
Dr James P Cornette, president of West Texas State College in Canyon, earned himself an "assist" this week in getting "Citizen of the Year" recipient Wayne Lawrence to the Chamber banquet Thursday. Boss Lion Labry Ballard, the only person who knew that Lawrence had been selected for the honor, was startled when his discreet routine check showed that Lawrence wasn't planning to attend the banquet. For the first time since the Chamber banquets started, Lawrence was going to be absent in order to take his Junior Olympic swimming team for its weekly practice session in WT's indoor pool. Ballard called Dr Cornette and explained the situation. Dr. Cornette, in turn, called Lawrence with a fabricated story about WT pool being closed during "Dead Week" prior to final semester exams. Lawrence accepted the story, attended the banquet and got the award . . . thanks to Dr James Cornette.
